The Soil Manual: Testing Your Foundation
In our first look at the garden (blog titled “Tend To Your Garden”), we talked about navigating the thorns, which are those inevitable hardships life throws our way. But what about the ground or foundation we grow in? We often treat self-care like a luxury when it is actually a requirement. We must care for ourselves at least as well as we care for those around us. Without it, we risk burnout or in plant terms, drying out. Do not let guilt derail your well-being; it’s time to move past the thorns and look at the foundation.
The Deficit of Guilt
Guilt leaves us in a constant deficit. We pour ourselves into others, letting our own gardens wither while we tend to patches neglected by their owners. If you feel "under-watered" or unable to find your light, it is time to return to your own soil.
Testing the Foundation
Good gardeners test soil nutrients before planting. Similarly, you cannot demand output without examining your input. Don’t skip your "soil tests"—the physicals, the therapy sessions, or the time needed to grieve a loss. Before you can grow, you must know what your foundation is missing.
Enriching Your Soil
Improvement requires radical honesty. We often justify operating on minimal sleep and high stress because we are "holding it all together," but success is not a substitute for health. To thrive, enrich your soil with a plan:
Take Inventory: Identify exactly what is missing from your "garden."
Prioritize Physicality: List your basic physical requirements first (sleep, hydration, movement).
Implement Slowly: Incorporate only one need at a time.
Ensure Consistency: Wait for 30 days of steady growth before adding the next need.
The Responsibility of Protection
This level of focus can feel selfish, but your personal health is your professional calling card. Consider this: no one wants their hair done by a stylist whose own hair is a mess, nor do they want their car fixed by a mechanic whose own truck won't start.
While you may feel obligated to help, remember that people will often accept your help even when you are in dire straits. It is your sole responsibility to protect your energy. Allocate to others only what is left after your own needs have been met. Never before.
